Numerous news outlets have reported that fencing surrounding Echo Park Lake is
scheduled to be removed, although the fence is still in place. Residents of a homeless
encampment, consisting of approximately 200 people, were relocated from the park in
March 2021 and fencing was installed so repairs and renovations could be made. The
planned removal of the fence was one of the first acts of newly-elected CD 13
Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez. According to Fox News, nearby residents are
“outraged” over the fence removal. During the original Echo Park Lake cleanup,
crews removed 723.5 pounds of biological waste and 300 pounds of hazardous waste,
including drug paraphernalia.
