Overflowing trash bins at corner of Sunset and Hyperion
Due to the tragedy of the recent horrific fires in Los Angeles, the subject of trash on our Silver Lake streets seems minor while our fellow City residents recover. Nevertheless, the presence of litter and trash along our streets has affected the City’s quality of life over the last several years and needs to be addressed as our City moves forward.
Litter and trash are nothing new. There are historical accounts of litter along the ancient Roman roads that connected its’ empire. Indeed, the challenge of disposing it also not new: Monte Testaccio in Rome is a 115 foot high mountain of ancient amphorae, originally used for storing olive oil.
Our City does a decent job of keeping our streets clean, a challenge for a city of almost 4 million people. Our culture enables this: multiple disposable products, few trash cans, and, unfortunately, the laziness of throwing trash on the street expecting it to be picked up.
This needs to change: we all benefit from a cleaner neighborhood.
Nevertheless, we can do our small part by picking up things we see on the street in
our immediate neighborhoods. Picking up the occasional fast food wrapper that the
wind blows out of a trash can, or the plastic bottle thrown out of a window by a lazy
driver will help reduce litter and keep our City clean. The downstream effects are
immeasurable, as this trash would not wind its’ way through the City to the ocean.
Silver Lake Together has been following a continual overflowing trash issue at the
corner of Sunset and Hyperion. Multiple area businesses share bins, which were too
small. SLT contacted the Bureau of Sanitation , who was unaware of the problem.
They worked with businesses to increase trash bin sizes, and the situation is
improved. SLT continues to monitor the situation.
While we can all try and keep our immediate neighborhoods clean, larger issues
such as that on Sunset need the City’s attention. If you see a situation that needs
attention, we encourage you to report it to the City so they can address it.

Update
The City has repaired the broken street lights along Silver Lake Boulevard and
removed a significant amount of the encampment at Temple, Beverly, and Silver
Lake Boulevard.
From our story last fall: What a Welcome...
